Before Their Local.

Thats right for all you lincoln based bikers. One of our local customers has found a sprayer worth his salt. Having seen the results I am inclined to agree, how would I know? I used to be a sprayer in the motor industry and have a fair idea what a really good job looks like!
It's a thumbs up to the lads at
Quarry Bodyworks.

Are you getting what you pay for?

It seems that you are not. We had a gent in the Monday before the start of TT week, he had his Ducatti resprayed ready for the trip. It had some cracks in the plastic that the sprayer said he would plastic weld.

The spray job was great but there was a problerm with the so called plastic welding. It was a bit of filler and fiber glass smeared across the back for support hence it had recracked, no surprise there!

Just recently another customer was almost suckered by a spray shop saying they could plastic weld. When they started talking about reinforceing the break to stop it cracking further, he decided not to go back because he had lost trust in them. He felt they did not know what they were doing.

Plastic welding has been around for a long time. It is recognised by insurance companies as a proper repair meeting their very high standards, it is also part of the NVQ, SNVQ, National Diplomer, Higher National Diplomer and Foundation degree for motor vehical engineering and yet some repair shops still bodge repairs; there is no call for it; this is part of the reason we do not spray, you can see we have given you the 'real deal'!

We have seen over time repairs using super glue, rivets with metal support, soldering iron and super glue, filler and fiberglass and wire ties. All valid temporary repairs by the DIYer but have no place in the professional workshop.

If you are paying large amounts of money for a repair you should expect the best, it's not always a good idea to go to a one stop shop; once the paint is on you do not know what you have paid for. It may be a great finish but will it be let down by the foundation crumbling?

Deisel spills.

There is a campaign to make fuel spills more main stream. To make the motorist at large more responsible when filling up. Being a biker I have known about this for years but it still surprises me how many people find that this is a problem on our roads.

The kill spills campaign is part of the British Motorbike Federation (BMF)- the largest group of riders in this country. I came across these stickers at a recent bike fest., if I had not noticed them on the MAG stand I would still be no wiser about the lobby. I must say thanks to the lads on the MAG stand for the update and the stickers which we now have on our van.

Being more aware I have noticed a distinct lack of other vehicles not showing their knowledge of the campaign. We have a few Stickers left over for anybody wishing to show support, just drop in and pick one up,  or obtain some from the groups direct.

Some stats. from D.O.T
Accidents caused by oil/diesel spill from 2000-05

22 Deaths.
595 Serious accidents.
617 Deaths from major injuries.
3,020 slight injuries.
If you would like to read a fuller report go to killspills.org.uk which is part of the BMF web site. The stats. given here are from their report.

I would like to say thanks to MAG and Killspills for the info.

Two teas and a bite to eat.

"Two teas please!"  We are in the Bardney Heritage Centre tea room in Lincolnshire, a newly built replica of Bardney railway station. The tables are arranged around a big wood burner in full flame. Lynne, Barry and team add an extra warmth with there friendly welcome. The tea arrives in a big white china teapot with a jug of  milk and produces four good cups of tea.The tea room also provides hot snacks which are cooked fresh to order, it takes a little longer to arrive at the table but is well worth the wait. The other end of the room is given over to memorabilla of the railway and local area.

If you are out for a spin late in the week this is well worth a visit. Admission is free, so buy a cup of tea or mug of coffee at £1 and £1.10 respectively. They also do some great scones and tea cakes. Dont forget to spend some time browsing the gifts and cards while soaking up the atmosphere.

You will find the centre at:
Station Yard,Station Road,Bardney, Lincolnshire LN3 5UF.

Morini at the Cafe.

While I was at the Kitchen Cafe tucked away amoung the super bikes and cruisers was a little gem, a Moto Morini sport 3 1/2. At first glance it looked like it had been restored but having spoken with the owner it was in orginal  condition apart from some wear on the seat and a couple of holes in the faring where the mirrors go. By the way,  if there is anybody that has a pair of orginal mirrors, off/near side get in touch as the owner is looking for a pair!

The morini was known to be a sure footed bike but when the owner first took it for a spin after he had reconed the master cylinder and MOTed it, it was not an inspiring ride, in fact it felt dangerous.

The bike was put away for some years. At the beginning of this year it was time to get the bike back on the road but before going back out it needed a good service and a thorough check over. While doing this it was discovered that the shaft in the swing arm had seized solid. It was time to replace them! Shock! Horror! They would not move no matter what the owner did; disheartend he went to his next door neighbour, if this did not work that would be it!

A plan was hatched, they would heat both sides of the shaft at the same time. So, with a big set of stillsons and a long scaffold pole with the bike braced they set to getting the shaft out but it was not having any of it! The pair of them were hanging off the end of the scaffold pole before it moved just enough to inspire them to continue but it was not going to give up without a fight! Needless to say that the swing arm shaft is now regularly greased.

The owner and bike are out and about enjoying a more sure footed ride.
